Those who didn’t get the news continued celebrating the new year in late March through April 1st and became the butt of jokes and pranks.

In Scotland, April Fools’ traditionally lasts two days, with the second day dedicated to pranks involving the posterior, called “Taily Day.” This is where the “kick me” sign originated!

BBC’s famous 1957 “spaghetti tree” broadcast remains one of the most successful April Fools’ pranks in media history, convincing thousands of viewers that pasta grew on trees.
